Why is the delivered format of my photo not exactly as I ordered?

Photographs made by digital cameras are commonly taken in a 4:3 ratio. Classic analog formats have a ratio of approximately 3:2.

Digital imagery does not usually fill the paper format entirely. In order to save you the pain of manually cropping the photographs and cutting off the white borders, we provide the service of cutting the images to the size of the picture. This way, your picture becomes somewhat shorter than the format of the paper it is printed on.

In order to receive photographs in the ratio of a 35mm frame, you have to take care to provide imagery in the ratio of 3:2. Many digital cameras today provide the option of setting the size ratio.

If this is not the case with your camera, you could try using a piece of picture-editing software to manually set the desired size. The following table shows the most commonly used formats:

Digital camera
(Ratio 4:3)
Suitable for 35mm Ratio
(Ratio 3:2)
640 × 480 ca. 640 × 428
1024 × 768 ca. 1024 × 683
1280 × 960 ca. 1280 × 853
1600 × 1200 ca. 1600 × 1067
2048 × 1536 ca. 2048 × 1365
2560 × 1920 ca. 2560 × 1706

Due to automatic border-cropping, a variable image-width for portrait format (image-height for landscape) may be processed. The shorter side of the image is exactly 3.5", 4" or 5" in size, and the longer side of the image varies depending on the uploaded digital file.
None of your picture will be cropped.

Panoramic pictures can be produced with the following maximum widths: up to 6.3" by 3.5" high; up to 7" by 4" high; up to 7.5" by 5" high. If a panoramic picture cannot be processed to its maximum length, the image will be placed centered on the paper.

Also with the 12 to 30 inch posters, the longer side of the print is variable. However, the maximum width of the picture when printed landscape (maximum height when printed portrait) is equivalent to the format information (12x8", 18x12", 24x16" and 30x20").

None of your image information will be cropped, except for the manufacturing-related overlay (i.e. we trim any white border, but not your picture.)
